Motor City Comic Con 2000

Yes, it's that time of year again.  The grass is green, the temperature is rising, and there's scantily clad pen and ink female figures as far as the eye can see.  Yep, there's nothing like convention time!

In case you missed my write-up of last year's Motor City Comic Con, you might want to go read that first by clicking here

Some of the information and events were repeated this year, and some of the items I reference in this article have roots in the first piece, so it's a good idea to read the earlier article before beginning this one.  Plus, that saves me from having to type everything all over again...and after my trip to the show, I don't think I could even manage to build up enough energy for a copy and paste maneuver, let alone a wholesale rewrite.

This year's official program guide.  Click for a larger version.

That being said, the one thing I do want to mention in the introductory note of this piece as well is that some of the graphics included in this article are large...and when I say "large", I mean "don't blame me if you click on the link and it takes 20 minutes to load over your 28.8 connection" kind of large.  Some of the photo scans weight in at nearly 2 megabytes apiece, which is why significantly smaller versions have been embedded in the body of this article.  You'll be told which images have higher resolution version hiding behind them, and I leave it up to you as to which ones you need to get a better look at.

I'd like to start by thanking Michael and the rest of the Motor City Conventions folks for setting up press passes for us.  It really helps open things up with the guests when they think we're not just your average ordinary guest approaching them with silly questions - questions which they've probably already answered at least a hundred times that day to boot.  Attending with me were Eric "I'm gonna whine until you talk about me and my Episode 1 poster with lots of autographs in your article" Wlodarczak (Eric has a very cool Episode One poster with a lot of cool autographs, including Liam Neeson and many more), Mark "I'd like meat, with a side of meat, and oh, can I have more meat?" Minicuci and Dustin "Wow, our servers can really do that?" Roberts from our collecting site, Yakface, as well as Chris "You guys are whacked!" Holoka from Toshi Station...or RebelScum...or whoever he happens to be creating typos...err, I mean "working diligently"...for this week (sorry Chris, just couldn't resist!), and they were all just as ecstatic as I was that we didn't have to deal with the lines to pick up badges or register for the show while we were there.  A good time was had by all, and we definitely appreciate the help, folks.  As a side note, if you ever get the chance to meet Chris in person, LSilky becomes even funnier to you afterwards...and that's all I'm sayin' about it, so you're just going to have to trust me.

Sigh...I had all of these in my closet when I was a kid...

I'd also like to thank the guys from Heroes-For-Sale and Men In Black Collectibles, who helped ingratiate me with the convention guests to allow the hugely fun gathering down in the hotel bar to take place, and they're not bad folks themselves, either.  They were in last year's show, and they're still the folks that have the outstanding costumes and toys that you'll see pictures of throughout this article.  Heroes is based in the U.K. and MIB Collectibles has a store here in Michigan (they partner quite a bit together) and were nice enough to drag me along for the fun and excitement that takes place after the convention doors are closed for the night.

Besides...all those British accents get easier to understand after a few good drinks.  Dennis?  You out there?  You were right about where we needed to be, and that's all I'm saying on the matter.  Those Men In Black Collectibles guys are absolutely nuts...but they've got a hearse, and apparently chicks dig the hearse...even the ones from Star Wars, like Mercedes N'goh, aka Rystal from ROTJ:SE...

Lose the makeup, and Mercedes likes to play just like everyone else does..click for a larger image

Enough with the introductory schmoozing though...let's take a look inside, shall we?
