Contains spoilers for Episode II.
Summary and Commentary: Our tale begins as young Boba plays with figurines of his dad and a Trade Federation droid. I would think that the "galaxy's greatest bounty hunter" wouldn't want his image to be known well enough to appear in action figure form. His primary caregiver is a Threepio-esque droid named MU-12. MU tells young Fett that daddy is away at work. Meanwhile, Daddy is indeed at work. Jango infiltrates the mansion of Black Sun Vigo, Antonin. And, in honorable bounty hunter fashion, Jango fulfills Antonin's last wish by telling him who paid to have him killed, Dreddon the Hutt. Jango travels to collect on his contract only to find Dreddon dead, in quite a gruesome manner I might add. Surprise! The assassin is still in the room, with her blaster now leveled at Jango. It is none other than, Zam Wesell, in an outfit I've not seen the likes of since around 1983 (you figure it out). The reader is given to believe that Jango and Zam have quite a sordid history. Uh Oh. Dreddon was supposed to pay Jango, Antonin was supposed to pay Zam, what a crazy, silly, delicious mix up. And what of the romantic tension? A very creative and original plot device. They both leave, because there is no profit in killing each other. The story is not over yet.... There is a touching reunion of father and son, but wouldn't you know it? Daddy needs money because his last employer was unable to pay, so off to work yet again. When Jango goes to meet his contact at a bar on Coruscant, for some reason I kept thinking how reminiscent the whole scene is of a certain cantina scene I've seen somewhere before. Maybe because it's almost exactly the same! Fett is now charged with finding a rare religious artifact that has been stolen from the private collection of Fett's anonymous employer. The idol comes from the planet Seylott, with a primitive culture of Force-sensitives. Did I mention that the this little idol is THE DESTROYER OF WORLDS?! Well it is, as Jango is informed after he delivers a fatal wound to the creature trying to restore and defend the idol. Hey! Zam's Back! Apparently someone hired her to get the idol as well. I was half expecting the lil' rascals to come running out with Petey bringing up the rear. Zam steals the idol from Spanky, I mean Jango ... and they're attacked (I'm getting tired). He runs away, thinks better of it, and goes back to save Zam. Jango keeps the idol and his helmet and the two bounty hunters part ways, foreshadowing that they'll see each other again. Jango gives the idol to his contact, who in turn, gives it to his employer, who plans on using it to destroy "the heart of this corrupt sickly republic." Father and son embrace yet again. The End. Light Side:
Dark Side:
I have a bad feeling that I'm going to like this book even less after I see Episode II. For more on the idol of destruction, Jango, and Zam, check out my review of Zam Wesell. Discuss this article on the Echo Station message boards. (Nekhrun can't figure out how Lucas can get him to keep buying just about anything related to Star Wars.) |
